About Vowery
Vowery Carlile, an educator, author, and educational consultant has a passion for teaching gifted students. She shares her expertise with school districts, administrators, and teachers in hopes that it will help build strong gifted programs that meet the ever changing needs of gifted and talented students.
Vowery Carlile has been involved in educating students for 30 years. She has taught in the regular classroom as well as a pull-out program for the gifted and talented students. Currently she is coordinating Sundown ISD’s Gifted and Talented Program and teaching gifted students in grades K-12 in Sundown, Texas.
Vowery has worked on several projects at the state level. She was involved as a pilot teacher for the Texas Performance Standards Program, initiated by Texas Education Agency. She was also featured in several DVD’s promoting TPSP for school districts throughout the state of Texas. She helped write the Fourth Grade Guide to Success for TPSP. During the summer, Vowery travels in Texas, providing training for school districts and their teachers on TPSP.
Vowery also helped with another TEA project: The Small Schools Project. This involved making a CD of resources for gifted programs to be used by rural schools throughout the state of Texas. Sundown’s gifted program was featured on the CD. Sundown is a small rural school district in West Texas. Sundown’s G/T Program has been labeled as a model program by TEA. Many districts, small and large, ask for guidance in setting-up their g/t programs, based upon Sundown’s. Vowery started Sundown’s Gifted Program 19 years ago.
Vowery is now working with the Texas Education Agency and PBS on a program to promote awareness of gifted students. In February, 2009, she traveled to Austin, one of only 3 teachers in the state asked to help make an educational TV show, to be aired on PBS Stations, about the need to provide a quality education for the gifted student.
Vowery is also an educational consultant. She travels throughout the state of Texas training teachers on a variety of topics related to gifted education.
Vowery is an author of teacher resource books. She has written 36 resource books, with more to come. Her books provide curriculum that encourages creative thinking for all students, especially the gifted. Vowery’s books are used in her own classroom as well as classrooms throughout the state of Texas.
Currently Vowery serves as the Region 17 Director on TAGT’s (Texas Association for the Gifted and Talented) State Board. She was elected to this position 3 years ago and will continue for another 2 year term. She works with other directors around the state to improve services for gifted students in Texas.
